Winifred Whitfield's Voyage to Poughkeepsie
Wednesday, July 09, 2008

My visit to upstate New York was not what I thought it would be - it was better.

First the Shuttle from Prospect Park to #4 train to Grand Central Station. That worked. Then enter Grand Central Station and a young man immediately offered to take my small but heavy suitcase up the tall flight of stairs. Accepted - Thank you. Then the majesty of Grand Central.

I purchase my ticket for the train which would begin Winifred's voyage to Poughkeepsie, NY - Track 30.

While waiting in line, I glanced near me and saw a most incredible being. With my ticket now in hand, I approached him and ask why he was dressed so beautifully that day.

A Most beautiful Being

I am in New York for "Fashion Week" he repiied. "May I take a photo of you I ask." The light was pretty terrible for a photo and I did not have my flash with me. He was very receptive to having a portrait created - even under these circumstances - I told him I was a professional. "Let's just use the counter light to light your face." " Like this he said", as he struck a portrait pose. "Perfect", I replied. The station was so busy with hundreds of people streaming throughout the station, but as you can see, we were given this moment - this very rare moment when there was no one else in view. We exchanged informtion and said good -bye. I hope to see him again.

I then boarded my train on track 30 for Poughkeepsie, where I would be met at the station.

A comfortable hour and a half later friends picked me up.

After purchasing necessary food and beverage we head toward their home. Along the way, they pointed out the deteriorating but still absolutely amazing remains of the old Bennett College for Girls. I have enhanced this image to make it look the way it felt to me. Built in 1890, it closed in 1977. If you are anything like me you will want to know more about it so I have included one of many links I found.

Oh, the stories I bet it could tell.

Renmeleon:  I just happily stumbled upon your site (via an ad on ZNE for Mere Words Media) and I had to comment for several reasons. First, your story about your chance encounter with the "incredible being" is so refreshing. Most people would stick their nose up and comment negatively about his attire. Maybe it is because I am also an artist, maybe because I am open-minded, but I think he is wonderful and that little moment you were allowed for the shot was phenomenal. Thank you for sharing him, it brought a smile to my face. :) The other reason I wanted to comment was because of the love and joy that comes through your work. Your portraits are absolutely enchanting. I am not able to have one done personally but if ever given the chance you will hear from me. Your obvious care and compassion comes through so clearly and I loved reading the stories of how your work impacted people's lives. I wish more people had your view. Thank you for what you do. :::hugs::: May God bless you with many years to come, I look forward to seeing more of your work. Namaste, Ria :)
Margene:  I really enjoyed that!! Looking forward to having a little get together when (if) your schedule calms down. mls
